September

September has
The sweetest smile —
And a habit of
Hiding it
Behind her hand.

Tentative,
Breezy embraces
Aren’t given up easy
At the start.
She wants to be wooed.

She’ll tell you
Summer’s her one
True love,
But all the while,
She’s casting
Come-hither eyes
At autumn.

She comes
With cool
Rain kisses,
Takes your hand,
Draws you to the piano,
Begs a song.

Counts to 26
And sends time
To find you.
Rings a single
Windchime note.

We put on
Temporary tattoos
And read each other’s
Cards.
Scaring lovers
In the graveyard,
As bee-buzz
Takes on
Urgency.

A low voice,
And she’s always
Been moody,
But with no desire
To pain.
Makes up for
Her dark days
With wildflower winds
And brilliance
Unsurpassed.

And old friends
May diverge
A while,
But even after years
Apart,
This meeting again
Is effortless.

Just happened to be finishing this up today, as Victoria posted about symbolism over at the dVerse Poets Pub. It suits, I think. September is my oldest acquaintance. In more ways than one.

What a great example of personification as a symbol. I love the unpredictability of September and its anticipation of autumn.

September definitely is a fickle month…sometimes looking back longingly at August and sometimes flirting with October. She is a moody month indeed! Enjoyed this.

September can be most compromising! It’s at the cross-road. It can tamper with the heat of Summer to the chill of Winter. It provides that respite to enjoy the good of both worlds! Nicely Emily!

Not a word here that didn’t speak beautifully–if a poem can have diction, this one’s is perfect–I was going to say the third stanza was my favorite, until I read the sixth–some excellent work here with both symbols and language.
