Tears – A Villanelle

Who can comprehend the meaning of tears–
That complex chemistry that measures pain
And traces salted rivers through the years?

With back to wall we watch oncoming spears
Of anger, pitched and driven like the rain
But who can comprehend the depth of tears?

A ripening moon tunes its silvered ears
To celebration of the gathered grain
And traces salted rivers through the years.

The black and twisted branch preys on our fears
On midnight roads with many miles to gain
But can it comprehend the need for tears?

In graveyards, weed-grown, set about with mirrors
We walk the gravel bound up by this chain
And trace the salted river through the years.

Amidst the din the voices of the seers
Give shape to formless thought with which we strain.
Still, who can comprehend the depth of tears
And trace these salted rivers through the years?
