Shadow Surveillant

The shadow waits
To my right hand —
Eye-corner ghost,
Watching me watching,
Shade of dust
And the dire wolf.

Left-hand turning,
The light changes.
The shadow again
Lingers in the bending
Of focused sunlight
Through layered lens.

Now I watch
The oncoming fracture —
Accidental and expected —
Like a tide shifting
To send the wave
Up over then down
Upon the watcher
In the shadow.

Off the Chart

Is everything this?
Variations on a theme.
One-one. Two-two. Three-three. Four-four.
Knit-two, purl-two.
Mix one cup of flour and a quarter cup of sugar…
And add red to blue to get purple.
Shuffle and plie.
Scales and exercises to warm up the fingers.
Learn these steps.
Stomp-brush hop ball-change.
One-two. Two-three. Three-four. Four-one.
Now move your legs and shake your hands.
A dash of this, a new brush. Chopin. Beethoven. Brahms.
Pick up the pen again. And again.
The plot unfolds. And unfolds.
Repeat.
Add another dimension.
Slip slip knit.
Follow the chart until.
Until.
And now improvise.
A dash of this and that.
Give it your blood.
Legs and arms waving.
Needles click-clacking.
Alone and together in time and space.
Introduce the deviation
From the pattern.
Add an ingredient to the recipe.
Substitute this for that.
Use a hand for a measuring cup.
Get lost along the known route.
And venture into the new.
